Saint Augustine (354-430)

Against the Letters of Petilian

Translated by J. R. King

Book II

Chapter 41

Petilian said: “And, again, he taught us that schisms should not arise, in the following terms: ‘Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul, and I of Apollos, and I of Cephas, and of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?’ ”

Augustine answered: Remember, all of you who read this, it was Petilian who quoted these words from the apostle. For who could have believed that he would have brought forward words which tell so much for us against himself?
